PCs crashing when printing after installing the latest Windows Updates

The Problem

On Tuesday 9th March 2021, Microsoft released many updates in to the world, as they do most Tuesdays.
However, we have heard increasing reports that some users are experiencing a stop error (BSOD, Blue Screen Of Death) with error APC_INDEX_MISMATCH immediately when clicking the “Print” button in any application.
The computer does automatically restart and boot up as normal (for now) but it is advised to resolve this issue as soon as possible. The updates in question are :

KB5000802 - Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 20H2
KB5000808 - Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 2004

We have diagnosed this so far to be an issue when printing to a Kyocera printer using the “KX” printer driver. Some other printer brands may also be affected such as Ricoh and Samsung.

Microsoft have acknowledged this error with the following description:

After installing this update, you might receive an APC_INDEX_MISMATCH error with a blue screen when attempting to print to certain printers in some apps.

and are investigating.

The Solution

For the moment, uninstalling the update from the Programs and Features window seem to resolve the issue. However, being an automatic update, the problem update may well get installed again without the user’s knowledge.

Update 15/03/2021

Microsoft have released a fix for this problem which will now resolve the blue screen issues.

KB50001567 - Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 20H2
KB50001566 - Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 2004

It appears to be an optional update at the moment and will not install automatically. To install it please go to Windows Settings > Updates > Optional Updates.
